Sriram Raghavan needs no introduction. He's one of the best script writers we have in Bollywood today, who mostly likes to experiment with dark, thriller genre. Ram Gopal Verma's - Ek Haseena Thi starring Urmila Matondkar and Saif Ali Khan written by Raghavan, was highly appreciated by the audience and critics. Raghavan stepped into director's shoes with Johnny Gaddar starring Neil Nitin Mukesh, followed by Saif-Kareena starrer Agent Vinod and now Badlapur - Don't Miss the Beginning. Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Varun Dhawan are the lead actors and also the main highlight of this revenge drama. If you still haven't seen the promo yet, here it is.

Story -
The story of Badlapur is pretty straightforward. Varun Dhavan (Raghu) is married to Yami Gautami (Misha). One fine day, Misha and her young son are out shopping, and have their car parked in front of a bank. Nawazuddin Siddiqui (Laik) and Vinay Pathak (Harman) rob the bank, come out and steal Misha's car, while Misha and her son is in the car. Frightened with what's happening around, both of them start to panic, when Misha is shot with a bullet in her heart whereas the young kid falls out of the running car. Harman escapes with the robbed money, Laik surrenders himself to the police.

After knowing what has happened, Raghu is in a state of shock, he meets Laik face-to-face in the prison, assaults him, asking who killed his wife and son. In his defense, Laik tells its done by his partner, but refuses to tell his real name. The court orders a punishment of 20 years in jail for Laik and Raghu is out, depressed and hunting for Laik's partner-in-crime. The story takes off when Raghu comes to know about Harman and then starts the Psycho revenge drama. (No spoilers, yet!)

The Good -
As the tag line says, "Don't miss the beginning", ensure that you don't (provided, you haven't seen it yet). Badlapur, although its a small place in Thane District, here its meant to be Revenge. Varun Dhawan in his past films - Mein Tera Hero, Student of the year and Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya played a role of a flamboyant, chocolate hero, whereas in Badlapur, he's playing a dark character - a complete departure. And with an actor like Nawazuddin Siddiqui who is well known for his performances in Kick and Gangs of Wasseypur - Part 2, the expectations are too high.

Raghu (Varun), from a normal guy to a psycho / serial killer seeking vengeance for the loss of his dear ones, does the job really well. Looking at his stellar performance, I can say he's more of an established actor who has chosen good films so far. Laik (Nawazuddin) is the perfect villain you could probably ask for. He's a finest actor who brings life to whatever character he plays, and in Badlapur, he doesn't disappoint either. Right from his body language, to expressions, he simply steals the show from start to end.

Misha (Yami) had a very small role, in fact, you can call it a cameo. Jhimli (Huma) also a little part, but she does leave an impression. Vinay Pathak as Harman does a good job, Radhika Apte (Kanchan / Koko) is equally good (she looks damn hot too) and Divya Dutta too makes her presence felt with her flawless acting. A thriller has to have a gripping story, top notch performances, excellent direction and a background score to keep you on the edge of your seat. Well, guess what? Badlapur has all ingredients that ticks the right boxes.

The Bad -
The first half is a little slow and as the story progresses, it gets a bit boring. The tagline reads "Don't miss the beginning" but there isn't much that goes in sync with the story. (*These things aren't actually the negatives, but such small nicks could have been easily averted.*)

Don't miss this:
Sriram Raghavan is a fantastic writer and when it comes to twists and turns, he knows exactly where to put them. Ensure that you don't miss the part 5 minutes before intermission and also the penultimate last 5 minutes. Also, first confrontation between Raghu and Laik, the scene where Raghu meets Jhimli and Raghu meeting Harman & Koko are very well shot.

Verdict:
Sriram Raghavan's Badlapur starring Varun Dhawan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui is technically sound. A near flawless script with perfect execution, excellent direction, first-rate performances, Sachin-Jigar's super-hit music and a gripping background score are things that go in its favor. If you're looking for good cinema and like intense, dark thrillers, you simply can't afford to miss Badlapur.

Rating - 4/5
